Two hexagonal WWII pillboxes situated less than 370m apart on the beach north of Deal, Sandwich Bay, and are enclosed with barbed wire.
The northern pillbox measures 5m by 5.5m and the southern one measures 5.4m by 4.2m. Both pillboxes are first visible on military aerial photographs taken in February 1941 [1] and have been mapped from a series taken in February 1946 [2]. The southern pillbox is no longer visible by April 1950 [3] and the northern one by June 1980 [4].
The pillbox to the north is almost entirely enclosed by a length of barbed wire measuring 94m. A separate length of barbed wire (c.380m) extends south along the beach and encloses the pillbox to the south. Both sections of barbed wire had been laid down by February 1942 [5]; the northern enclosure has been removed by June 1980 [4] and the length on the beach is gone by April 1950 [3]. Another length of barbed wire is visible on landward side of the pillboxes and extends between the pillboxes for 408m; this was first visible in and mapped from photos taken in February 1946 [6] and is gone by April 1950 [3].
