Features that appear to be related to bridge defence are visible at the eastern end of White Mill Bridge on early 1940s aerial photography [1]. These consist of a structure built onto the south parapet of the bridge and markings on the road at the mouth of the bridge. The structure appears to be concrete, it is walled, roofless and polygonal in plan with an opening on the west side. It has been interpreted as a shelter for guarding the bridge, possibly a Home Guard position. At least four rows of square markings are visible on the road and have been interpreted as a markings for laying out a roadblock. Similar markings are also visible on Milner Road immediately to the north (MWX43045), implying that this crossing of the river was heavily defended.

The markings have been removed by 1960s OS vertical aerial photographs of the area, however the walled structure was still extant at this date [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
