Summary
During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the remains of a large scale Roman structure were revealed and have been interpreted as being part of the eastern section of the south range of a mansio. A section of east-west walling located just to the north of the north wall of the main building suggests the presence of a narrow passage, matching a passage which was also located on the northern side of the painted house. During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the remains of a large scale Roman structure were revealed and have been interpreted as being part of the eastern section of the south range of a mansio. A 3.7m length of 47cm wide walling was located 1.2m north of the main northern wall; the rest had been heavily damaged by later features or lay outside of the limits of excavation. The wall survived to a maximum height of 20cm, it was situated on a foundation of flint, crushed tufa and clay set in a cream white mortar. These foundations were 66cm wide and 1.08m deep. (1)
