During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the extreme north-east corner of a barrack block was located in 1971 at the Battle of Britain Homes site which was situated over the footprint of the new York Street Bypass. Only about 1.5m of an east west end wall of this structure was revealed due to the majority of it lying outside the limits of excavation. During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the extreme north-east corner of a barrack block was located in 1971 at the Battle of Britain Homes site which was situated over the footprint of the new York Street Bypass. Only about 1.5m of an east west end wall of this structure was revealed due to the majority of it lying outside the limits of excavation.
The remains consisted of at least one course of chalk block walling 50cm wide, no associated north-south walls were located but two associated drains (B77 and B78) suggest that it must lie an unknown distance to the west. (1)
