A watching brief was undertaken in February 1954 by Frank Jenkins during ground works by Canterbury City Council on the site of a building demolished after enemy action in 1942. Work involved mechanical excavation across the basement area, removing 2.44m of soil down to the level of the natural brickearth. A short alignment and the butt-end of a ditch feature was recorded and 'Belgic' period pottery, burnt flints and much decayed animal bone were recovered from the primary silt of ditch fill.

When the cellar was constructed a small coin hoard of Theodosian date (385-95AD), in a pot, was rescued by Frank Jenkins. The pot was described as a 'cooking jar, hand made and uneven, of course grey paste having a smeared smooth black coating varying to medium brown'
