Summary

In Trench II, the Roman levels were sealed bt dark earth which contained late Roman and Medieval pot sherds. There were two pits; one of which contained residual Saxon pottery with a general group of mid 11th-early 12th century pottery. These pits were sealed by a thick deposit of garden soil containing pottery of mid 11th to 13th century date.

The site was excavated by CEC in 1954.

Two trial trenches cut to the rear of this building, contained Saxon and Medieval levels. In trench I the Roman levels were sealed by a layer of dirty grey loam yeilding material dating to the second half of the 12th century. Residual Saxon sherds were found in both this layer and the layer above, a yellow loam floor. Two hearths were recorded on the floor. The overlying layers of cultivated soil contained 13th and 14th century pottery.
