In Summer 1949 The Canterbury Excavation Committee excavated within two cellars on the south west side of St George's Street. The sites were coded CXV S and T.
These excavations revealed two Roman pits dating to first half of the 2nd century AD; traces of a timber building found, erected c. 200 and demolished before 250 AD. At about this time an apsed building was constructed on the site the remains of which have been much disturbed by modern cellars.
The destruction layers of the apsidal building were sealed by deposits of late Roman and early Medieval dark earth cut by pits, thought to date to the 13th century. Within the cellars the latest levels had been removed, but a small stretch of loam floor and a 17-18th century floor was also found, these sealed Medieval pits and were cut by a post hole and a timber slot.
