The Site of the Roman Theatre was excavated by CEC during 1950-1956.

The Roman building appears to have survived beyond the Norman Conquest. The present crossroads over the site comprised of St. Margaret's Street, Beer Cart Lane, Castle Street and Watling Street was known as Tierne before 1166, indicating that by this date the Roman building had been demolished. The building of the Norman stone Keep, perhaps under Henry I, is a likely occasion for the former Theatre's demolition, although earlier ecclesiastical buildiers cannot be ruled out.
