In summer 1949 an excavation of the area to the rear of 23 St. George's Street was undertaken by the Canterbury Excavation Committee.

Approximately fifty medieval rubbish and cess pits were found cutting into a Roman street beneath. Some of these pits provided useful pottery groups of the 13th and 14th centuries. One large pit contained debris from a wattle-and-daub building, much 13th century pottery and sherds from at least twenty crucibles. Documentary sources indicate the presence of moneyers in this area in the 13th century, and it is possible that the pit represents their dumped waste.
