In April 1951 The Canterbury Excavation Committee excavated an area now on the site of 6b St George's Street. The site, three trenches, was coded C XIX Z and it was hoped to find traces of a SE to NW Roman Street thought to pass at this point. The area proved, however to be very disturbed by 13th/14th century pits and unfortunately no Roman levels survived.
Trench I revealed several deep intersecting cess pits, yielding pottery from as early as the 11th century through to the fourteenth centuries. Above these pits in the 14th century was built a house with several phases of occupation evident.

Trench II a yellow loam floor may also have belonged to this house, it overlay black earth, sealing a pit containing Roman brick fragments. Another loam floor was evident at the south end of the trench, this also overlay a pit of probable 11th century date. Four later, post Medieval pits cut into the Medieval levels.
A similar sequence of a Medieval loam floor overlying black sticky Medieval soil and cut by later pits was also seen in trench III.
