Monument details

HER Number:TR 15 NE 1613
Type of record:Monument
Name:Medieval Occupation, 47 Burgate Street (now 46)

Summary

Excavations were undertaken from road level behind the basement; the main features seen were the footings and walls of a substantial late Medieval building. These overlay and cut into a curious structure of concreted gravel about 1.83m deep and interpreted as the footings of a building of Roman date. It was cut by Medieval pits, a well, and a Medieval basement.

Excavation was undertaken in the basement of the site of 47 Burgate and on high ground to the rear of the premises during 1946-7 by CEC. The excavations in the cellar revealed a series of layers of Roman date. The deposits appear to relate to successive periods from the 1st to the 4th century. Partly overlying a deep rubbish pit traces of wood associated with numerous large nails, post-holes and other evidence, suggested the remains of a wooded building, dated by pottery and other finds to the 1st century. The pit contained a large amount of furrowed ware, and fragments of Samian, some bearing the stamps of various Claudian potters. A child's skeleton dating to the beginning of the third century was also found at a depth of 84cn below the cellar floor. A Roman well and gravel trackway were also identified.
Excavations were also undertaken from road level behind the basement (in Burgate?) the main features seen were the footings and walls of a substantial late Medieval building. These overlay and cut into a curious structure of concreted gravel about 1.83m deep and interpreted as the footings of a building of Roman date. It was cut by Medieval pits, a well, and a Medieval basement.
