Excavations were undertaken by the Stour Valley research group in 1964 in the cellar of 26 Burgate. The cellar was at a depth of 2.29m below the modern pavement level. At an average depth of 0.61m below the cellar surface was a band of clean clay c 3 in thick and burnt. Mixed soil lay above this containing 3-4th century Roman pottery and a coin of Victorinus. Beneath the burnt clay layer was mixed loamy soil containing Roman building debris and dated by pottery to the first half of the 3rd century. Beneath this was the remains of an old turf layer thought to date the 2nd century.
