In 1997 during a watching brief on the quarry a collection of large timbers were found. The largest piece was a squared beam 9m long, of high quality fast growing wood with a straight trunk and few knots. A comparison of pieces showed that they formed a pair, perhaps as vertical supports of a bridge. Dendrochronological dating was inconclusive. It is thought possible that they came from a bridge destroyed during a flood further upstream, the timbers having been washed down to this location. (1)
