During most of the Saxon period the area seems to have been unused, except perhaps for agricultural purposes. Very little Saxon pottery was found. In the late Saxon period a street of flint and cobbles was found running SE to NW and roughly parallel with the city wall. A timber building and a well-built stone furnace were also associated with it.
