The SE Transept was rebuilt by 1180 after the Great Fire of 1174.

After the great fire of 1174 which destroyed the eastern end of Lanfranc's Cathedral it took almost ten years of rebuilding before the cathedral was once again complete. The south east transept formed part of this rebuilding programme and when the two chapels, with rounded apses, contained in the transept were finished, dedicated to St. John The Evangelist and St. Gregory, glass illustrating scenes from the lives of the Saints were set up in the windows of each chapel.

In 1346 two Chantries were founded by Edward of Woodstock 'the Black Prince' and his wife Joan the 'Fair Maid of Kent' in the crypt beneath the SE Transept. The work was probably completed by Oct 1363, when the first chaplains were appointed. The northern chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the southern to the Trinity.
