After the great fire of 1174 which destroyed the eastern end of Lanfranc's Cathedral it took almost ten years of rebuilding before the cathedral was once again complete. The north east transept formed part of this rebuilding programme and when the two chapels, dedicated to St. Stephen and St. Martin, with rounded apses, contained in the transept were finished, glass illustrating scenes from the lives of the Saints were set up in the windows of each chapel.
