The Great Hall within the Archbishop's Palace was built between 1200 and 1220. At its eastern end was the Archbishop's Solar or private chamber. The Great hall and solar was largely demolished in c. 1650.

The Great Hall within the Archbishop's Palace was built between 1200 and 1220. At its eastern end was the Archbishop's Solar or private chamber. The solar was rectangular in shape measuring approximately 95 feet in length N-S by 32 feet in width E-W, and was situated above a vaulted undercroft. The Great hall and solar was largely demolished in c. 1650. Evidence for some of the solar and undercroft was recovered during excavations by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1982.
