Summary

An inn listed in 1692 as The Syne of Sandwich, and was later called The Sandwich in 1804. This inn then became The Princess Charlotte early the 19th century, probably named after the Prince Regent's daughter who died in 1817.

The Canterbury UAD states that this is a Rigdens/Fremlin/Whitbread inn.

An interesting inn. It was listed in 1692 as The Syne of Sandwich and the following year the Billeting Officer listed the inn for 4 soldiers.

By the early 19th century it was called The Sandwich and in 1804 Joseph Harris paid £12 rent p.a. to Rigdens the brewers.

The Rigdens Rent Books show that William Robbins was the innkeeper in 1820 but in 1821 he had been replaced by Isaac Pierce. There is a receipt from Rigdens in the City Archives for 1825 as follows:

The Sandwich became Princess Charlotte early in the 19th century probably named after the Prince Regent's daughter who died in 1817.

The Princess Charlotte closed in 1972, and the licence remained in suspense since copulsory acquisition in 1972.
