Between 2005 and 2007 Canterbury Archaeological trust carried out a watching brief. Three sequences of floors of medieval date were found at the junction of West Street and Sussex Road. These may be associated with remains found in the area to the northwest. These features were found in the middle of the current road, suggesting that if there had been a medieval predecessor to Sussex Road, it was on a different alignment or much narrower. (1)
