Summary

Napoleonic Fort in Margate. It is uncertain whether this record refers to Margate Battery or Fort Paragon, these may in fact be the same monument? The fort is marked on a chart of 1774 as 'Port P'. It is also visible on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map where it is marked as Fort paragon. A tunnel found at Dane Hill in close proximity to this monument is thought to be associated.

TR 355 712 (Sited from SMA map, see illustration card). Site of Napoleonic Fort. Listed as site 'h' on record form: site of Napoleonic war period fort. Uncertain whether this record refers to Margate Battery or Fort Paragon (are they one and the same?) (1). Marked on a chart of 1774 as Port P? [2,3]. To the south east a tunnel was discovered during archaeological works on land to the rear of 16-18 Dane Hill, Margate, which may have been associated with the defensive works on Fort Hill [4].
