In store in Ramsgate Public Library are skeletal remains and pottery, dated by Mr Norman Cook to 200-300 BC which were unearthed by corporation workmen during the construction of a cess-pit at TR 34946433, in Mount Green Avenue, Cliffsend, Ramsgate, on 20th May 1959. The remains of six persons were found laid E-W upon an old beach surface about 8 feet below present ground level, with an earthen mound over them, 3 feet high, and containing a large pot which was shattered during the digging. No further burials were found in the cesspits of the adjoining plots of land. (1) TR 39643 (sic, should read TR 349643) BA (sic) should read Iron Age) remains. Site no 172. (2) TR 349643 Council workmen unearthed in 1959 during the construction of a cesspit six skeletal remains along with some pottery. These have been dated late Iron Age. The skeletons were found laid E-W upon an old beach surface below a 3 feet high earthen mound containing a large pot which was shattered during digging. The location is about 8 feet below the present ground level. No further burials were found in the cesspits in the adjoining plots of land. (3) Additional reference (4-7)
