[TQ 9078 6410] Bronze weapons found A.D. 1824 [NAT] (1) A bronze gouge and four socketed celts found by Mr Vallance, on July 16th 1828, in brickfields at Sittingbourne, are now in Dover Museum. They were contained in an urn, together with 30lb. bronze or bell-metal. Another urn was discovered, about 3ft. away, containing a bronze dagger 12 inches long and six bronze rings - not finger rings. A skeleton lay 12ft. below the surface of the soil. The site is close to, but in no way connected with, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery (TQ 96 SW 27). (2)(3) The area is now waste ground formerly worked for brick-earth. No closer siting evidence than George Payne's small scale map (1.125 miles:1 inch) could be found. (4) Additional references. (5-7)
