[TQ58857350] Earthwork [T.I.] (1) "I have on two separate occasions gone carefully over the ground in the vicinity but can only note a shallow depression on its summit. According to evidence supplied locally, this depression has remained the same and no one can remember it as an open hole. From the general shape of the hollow depression I would be loathe to define it with certainty as a collapsed dene-hole." (2) Possible Castle Mound. (3) This earthwork is in poor condition generally, having been severely mutilated at various periods and at present is heavily overgrown, with the result that accurate observation and identification of its original purpose is rendered difficult. General cross-section and dimensions [see illustration card] The possibilites are:- (i) A Barrow - but general appearance and plan in conjunction with material of construction - gravel - are against this. (ii) A dene-hole - normal situation of these features is on a hill-slope; this earthwork is on the summit of a fairly prominent ridge. No sign of chalk and flint rubble, usual upcast from denehole, and also 'bozing' of the central depression failed to produce the result one might expect if this was the remains of a collapsed denehole shaft. (4) This feature has now been quarried away. (5) Additional Bibliography (6)
