In 1963 an emergency excavation was carried out by the Reculver Excavation Group under the direction of Mr Brian Philp. The dig was necessitated by the discovery of Roman remains during the digging of foundations for a new lavatory block on the caravan site adjacent to the fort. A corn drying oven was found. It was built of flints, tile and sandstone blocks and had a central flue and side vents, with a central wall across the chamber to support the floor of the oven above. (1-5) Photograph (6-8)
