[TR 37225550] Battery [NR] (Site of) (1) "An ancient battery", destroyed by the sea in 1862 was situated on the foreshore at Small Downs, SE of Chequers P H. (2) The site is occupied by a high shingle bank and there are no visible remains. (3) The former site of a Napoleonic battery at Worth, TR 37225550. A letter of 1803 mentions two Deal batteries. William Twiss of the Royal Engineers subtitles battery No 1 Tenant Hill and No 2 as Maiden Hill. He says that both batteries were in good condition and mounted 6 36 pounders French "equall (sic) 42 pounders English" and 2 9 pounders, all on traversing platforms. In May 1808 Twiss, now a Major General, states that the front wall of no 1 was "entirely washed down". He proposed the rebuilding of the wall "further back" and that it should be reveted with Purbeck stone. The wall should be 17 feet high, 5 feet of ditch and 12 feet above ground and 8 feet thick at the top. This was the battery doubtless destroyed by the sea. (4,5)
