In May 1939 a denehole was discovered whilst digging an inspection pit in lorry sheds of F.G. Garlings, haulage contractor, Church [now Vicarage] Lane, Nonington at TR 25455218. It consisted of a shaft 6'3" in diameter and 31' deep, sunk through loam into the chalk, which had been sealed with a brick cap in the 18th c. At the bottom were four chambers extending 18-20' from the shaft and averaging 10' in height. The denehole is still open though covered with metal sheets. Surveyed at 1/2500. (1)
