Summary

A Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe reportedly found in the vicinity of Whitstable. Like others with a Whitstable provenance (see associated records), it may well have been found offshore, though this cannot be proved. No details of the date or circumstances of discovery are known. The axe was donated to the Royal Museum Canterbury in 1948.

A looped and socketed axe, four and three quarter inches in length, two and a half inches in width at the cutting edge, from Whitstable, was donated by a Mr. A. Ross `Fintonagh' Baxley Road, Maidstone, to the Royal Museum, Canterbury, on the 19th May 1948. It is on exhibition and the accession number is RM 7812. `Fintonagh' has, since 1957, been the property of the neighbouring Convent of the Sacred Heart. The previous owner, now dead, was a Mr. King. No one by the name of Ross has been traced at this address and no further information can be obtained about the axe (1).A Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe reportedly found in the vicinity of Whitstable.
