A 7th century Merovingian gold coin minted at Cologne, now in the British Museum (accession number 1953-5-4-1), was bought from Mr. J.A. Scott, 12 Plough Lane, Whitstable. Mr. Scott found the coin in 1952 on the beach at Swalecliffe at approximately TR 14316777. He assessed that it had been washed out from the cliff (1).
