Name:Library - built 1848 on remains of Medieval Abbot's guest hall

Summary

Library - built 1848 on remains of Medieval Abbot's guest hall The Abbot's Lodgings at St Augustine's Abbey. In the late 13th century under Abbot Thomas Fyndon (1283-1309) the whole of the range on the east side of the cloisters was taken over for the Abbot's Lodgings and additions made. The chapel was at the south end over the parlour and private 'suite' including an office for his chaplain over the storehouse. At the north end a special chamber led into the Great Hall now occupied by St Augustine's College Library since 1848. After the Dissolution these buildings were incorporated and indeed formed the larger part of the King's Palace in 1539 (TR 15 NE 349) until they were mostly demolished in the late 17th century.

[TR 15465782] Library [NAT]. (1) The Abbot's Guest Hall formed part of the west claustral range of St Augustine's Abbey. It was erected sometime after c1300 during a rebuilding of the entire range. After the Dissolution it was retained by Henry VIII as part of a royal palace (TR 15 NE 349). The undercroft still remains and its south end was excavated in 1845 by Butterfield, who built the College Library in 1848. (2-7)
