There was a Second World War roadblock on the bridge by which the Pilgrims’ Way crossed the Dover to Canterbury Railway. This railway, here, formed part of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line, and the bridge falls just outside the Outer Perimeter of the Canterbury Fortress. Details of this roadblock are unclear, perhaps a pair of concrete blocks, as at the neighbouring roadblock to the east. However, the Pilgrims’ Way, at this time, may have been little more than an earthen track, and the relative numbering of the blocks suggests this one may have been an afterthought. It will have been covered from a fortified house at the east end of St Augustine’s Road. This was road block No. 47 in a list of permanent road blocks in the 43 Divisional area at the end of November 1940.
