By late 1941 there was a major road block on the site of the present Riding Gate roundabout, blocking both the Old Dover Road and Rhodaus Town. The roadblock arrangements were more extensive and complicated than at lesser roadblocks. There were dense groups of concrete pimples flanking the two roads. This block would have been covered by fire from fortified houses up on St George’s Terrace, it formed part of the Inner Perimeter defences of the Canterbury Fortress.
