[TQ 9990 6348] Roman foundations found A.D. 1840-50 [R] (1) Roman building east of Broomfield. This is not mentioned as the site of a building either by Bedo(a) or Wheeler(b) and it seems possible that it may be the site of the cemetery described by Bedo as "in Moore Field" (Oare) and by Wheeler as "in Moorfield or Broomfield". This was discovered in 1844. (2)(3) A Roman cemetery has been brought to light in Moore Field, in the parish of Oare, on the western side of the road leading to the Ferry at Harty, in 1844 when the field was trenched. Many urns containing burnt bones and ashes were found, and also some cups of Samian ware, two had potters' marks - CRVCVRO. MARCIILI. M. (4) Roman cemetery found in Moor Field or Broom Field in 1844, a few hundred yards west of that found in Church Field [Kent 34 NW 3] appears to have been of similar date. (5) The O.S. published entry falls in a field called "Honse Field" in 1841(d); this is part orchard, part arable and there is no local knowledgeof anything having been found there. "Broomfield" and "Moore Farm", contiguous orchards, partly in Luddenham Parish and partly in Oare, have changed hands many times in the past few years but although the present owner (e) has only had them for 18 months he has known them all his life, and to the best of his knowledge nothing has ever been found on them.
