[TQ 8580 7023] 11th August 1894. Further N from the mound (TQ 87 SE 42), about 150 yards nearer the sea wall and within 30 yards of the road were found three graves from which were removed a Samian cup stamped SEXTII M and a Samian plate stamped LATINVS. Many bones and sherds, a small urn of black ware and a piece of Upchurch ware were also disinterred. (1) The Rev C.E. Woodruff, Lt Col Fagan and myself discovered two interments from which we obtained vases of Upchurch ware containing calcined bones and two Samian cups stamped LATINVS. F and SEXTII.M. A fragment of a bronze pendant ornament, a fossil echinus and a quartz pebble were found in one of the urns. (2) This site falls on the foreshore below high water mark. Nothing was seen to confirm it (3). Additional references (4,5). Also evidence for Roman pottery kilns and early 1st century salt winning and domestic activities including circular ditch feature (6). For site in context with others in inter-tidal zone, see (7).
