TQ 87 SE 16. A pit below high tide level at Slayhills excavated in 1949-54 was found to contain charcoal, briquettage and pottery sherds - ? wasters, dating from the 1st century (1). Probable pottery kiln nearby, records of site location not now traceable.(8) Additional reference to Slayhills Marsh sites (2). Additional index entries (3-10) Today with the sea wall breached, the marsh is subject to constant erosion and even at low tide the ground surface is reduced to narrow and discontinuous strips of land between the creeks. There is now no evidence of Kilns or Roman occupation visible in the area of the published name i.e. in the marsh proper, but some 350m. to the west near the Strayway in the area centred at ** there is a concentration of Kiln debris and wasters (see diagram and TQ 87 SE 42, 43, 44 and 45). (5)

In the winter of 1950/1951 an oval structure of baked red clay, measuring some 4ft x 1.5ft and similar to the ovens in the huts noted by RCAHM Essex (plate facing p.36), was seen in mud just off the Strayway at ** and photographed before it was destroyed (copy supplied). Similar structures had been noted previously in thearea centred at **. The coins noted by Gray in Num. Chron. (1954) were found 1948-52 along the seaward shore of the Strayway in the area centred **; they remain in his possession. (6)
