Discoveries from the marshes on Burntwick Island range from the pre- Roman period to about the end of the C2. Six Roman coins (see authority 2) have been found unstratified. Surg Comdr P.H.K. Gray has found c1951 an amulet here, a leaden dome 1.25 inches in diameter and 0.35 inches high: on the domed reverse are three incised semi-circular figures filled with lines and on the slightly countersunk obverse a cross, or Chi, flanked by A and what appears to be Omega. See F/55/5/7. (1) I have found the following Roman coins on the surface of Burntwick Island: Domitian, sestertius. Faustina I, sestertius. Faustina II, uncertain sestertius, uncertain As. Lucius Verus, sestertius. Marcus Aurelius, sestertius. Philip II, sestertius. (2) These coins were found in 1950-52, in the mud of the foreshore in the area centred TQ 8608 7165. No structures were seen but briquetage had been noted previously in the same general area. There is nothing visible there now. The coins remain in Gray's possession (3). Additional reference (4,5). For site in context with others in inter-tidal zone, see (6) and a photograph of some of the objects found on the site (7).
