Summary

Grade I listed building. Chartwell is a 20th century house incorporating 15th/16th century fragments. It was the Home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1922 until his death in 1965, and contains a collection of personal possessions and relics. It was presented to the National Trust during his life time by a group of his friends. The house was almost completely rebuilt for him in 1923 by Philip Tilden.

2. C20 house of red brick with stone basement. Architect Philip Tilden. 2 storeys, attic and basement. 6 windows in main block, 3 in left canted bay with parapet, 2 at right in slightly projecting gabled section. High pitched tiled roof with tall chimneys. Brick mullioned and transomed casement windows. Elaborate carved stone doorcase holds double door of old oak. The house incorporates fragments of an older building; C16 or C17 brickwork visible in places on external walls. (3) 5280 WESTERHAM MARINERS HILL Forecourt wall to West of Chartwell TQ 45 SE 45/1513 II 2. Long, high C20 brick wall with stone ball finials at intervals. Chartwell. Sir Winston Churchill's home. The house was almost completely rebuilt for him in 1923 by Philip Tilden in dull red brick and an odd undecided style. Two storeyed entrance front with an 18th century stone doorcase, very large and splendid and out of place. The garden front is twice as tall and has stepped gables. Dendrochronology dating of the roof gave a date range of 1515-1546. (6)
