Monument details

HER Number:TQ 67 SW 1078
Type of record:Listed Building
Name:THE OLD RECTORY HOUSE

Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1488 to 1899. House (16th century and later). An early 16th century timber-framed hall house restored by antiquarian G M Arnold, FSA, and architect Sir Herbert Baker in the 1890s. During the restoration they discovered rebateless mullions indicating that the original windows were unglazed and soot-stained roof timbers suggesting that it originally had no chimney. In addition, a 1656 token in the ground floor ceiling plaster reveals that the hall was divided into two storeys sometime after that date. The timber-framing was left exposed and infilled with roughcast. Hipped and gabled tiled roof.
