The Temple, Cobham Hall
II
C18 by William Chambers. Moved from Ingress Abbey. Ionic tetra-style in antis. Brick sides and slate roof Tablet with Latin inscription: Horace Odes 1 XIII.

The temple was designed by Sir William Chambers for John Calcraft and originally stood at Ingress Abbey. It was probably built in the mid-1760s. The circumstances of its removal are not know but records survive of stonemasons working to move it in 1820-1. At Ingress Abbey it housed Calcraft's collection of Roman altars. At Cobham it housed a statue of Cupid by Antonio Canova. The statue was probably sold sometime before 1957. (2)
