Monument details

HER Number:TQ 77 SE 13
Type of record:Findspot
Name:Roman pottery finds, possible kiln site?, Port Werburgh, Hoo St. Werburgh

Summary

The remains of 243 1st century Roman pots have been collected along the salt marshes on the north beach. The majority of the vessels were flagons, mostly of the cup-mouthed type, but there were a few other forms. The presence of 2 wasters (3 of them flagon necks), and two pieces of briquetage, suggests a kiln. The pottery is thought to have come from a deposit that has been affected by a change in the current, the result of a new embankment. The pottery was presented to the Maidstone Museum were it is believed to remain.

The remains of 243 1st cent. Roman pots have been collected during the last year by Mrs. B. de Seyssell along the salt marshes on the north beach of the islet at TQ 783708, below high tide level. The great majority of the vessels were flagons, mostly of the cup-mouthed type, but there were a few other forms. It is probable that the sherds have been washed out of the beach only over the past few years by the current deflected by the comparatively new embankment to the north. The pottery was presented to the Maidstone Museum. The flagons must have come from a deposit, and the presence of 12 wasters (3 of them flagon necks), also two pieces of briquetage, suggests a kiln.
