Name:DEANERY COTTAGE

Summary

Grade II listed building. Jettied, open hall house built in 1496-7, the hall was probably ceiled at the same time as the external brick chimney was constructed. The timber frame is infilled with roughcast and some close studding remains on the ground floor, the sides and back of the building are of red brick. The house has a hipped tile roof with smoke gablets. The jetty at the south end of the building has been partly underbuilt in brick. The house was renovated between 1983 and 1988.

Dendrochronology dating (of the roof?) gave a date of 1496/7. (2)

2. Probably built by Prior Goldstone II after 1494 for the 'firmarius'. C15 timber-framed banding with infilling of roughcast, part of the ground floor close studded and part rebuilt in red brick. The end window bays of the first floor oversail on the protruding ends of the floor joists, but the south one has been partly underbuilt. Curved braces support the eaves of the recessed centre. Hipped tiled roof with smoke gablets. External brick chimneystack to north-west. Three windows. The sides and back are of red brick. The interior has a crownpost roof.
