Summary

A inhumation burial containing a skeleton and fragments of two vessels of Upchurch ware were previously found a few yards west of the Pilgrim's Way, in a disused chalk quarry near Halling. One of the vessels had five circular indentations round the bulge. The grave was initially thought to date to the Romano-British period although this is now uncertain.

[TQ 70526606] Grave [OE] (Site of) (1) Skeleton found together with fragments of two vessels of Upchurch ware one of which had five circular indentations round the bulge, at a depth of 4' a few yards west of the Pilgrim's Way, in Whornes chalk quarry, Halling. (2) Site supplied on 1:2,500 Field Trace Kent 19/9/5 from information from Mr. G. Hutchings. (3) Although claimed to be Romano-British it is safer to leave the age of this grave open. Mr. Hutchings says "The site has now been entirely cut away but is marked as accurately as possible". (4) No further information. The site lies in a disused chalk quarry. (5)
