Monument details

HER Number:TQ 92 NW 32
Type of record:Listed Building
Name:THE STOCKS WINDMILL

Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1781 to 1781. Stocks Mill at Wittersham. The likely date of construction is 1781 - The centre post inside the Mill has the date 1781 and the initials R V carved on it. This is believed to be thedate of erection as it is certain a mill stood here in 1792. It has been argues that the mill stood somewhere else prior to its present location. Stocks Mill is the tallest post mill in Kent. Very few mills of this type survive as most were demolished when they were superseded by the more efficient smock mills. In 1980 the site was given to Kent County Council and extensive renovation was carried out to restore the mill to its original character. The mill takes it name from the surrounding area known as 'the stocks' on mid-19th century maps.
