Several Roman cremations were found, deposited in a straight line in what appeared to be a filled up trench, on the high ground to the north-east of Burnt Oak, Gillingham, [TQ 7754 6908 on O.S. 6" 1898] on the property of J.H. Ball. All the pottery was Upchurch ware, with the exception of a Samian cup and patera. Previously, Ball had discovered similar deposits when making a cutting near the high road in connection with the pier construction. V.C.H. suggests a Roman vessel from Gillingham, presented to Maidstone Museum, may have come from these burials. (1-3) Area TQ 7765 6925. Site pointed out to me by P.G.
