[TQ 7611 6832] Roman Foundations found A.D. 1800-10 [T.I.] (1)
The foundations of three rooms, associated with large quantities of painted wall plaster and broken tiles, Roman pottery, including Samian (f.37) fragments of glass and four coins (Claudius, Vespasian, Domitian, Faustina), were discovered in 1779 during the cutting of the ditch of Amherst's Redoubt, Chatham. Douglas found traces of inurned cremations but was unable to identify them positively as Roman. [There would seem to be no justification for the date of the O.S. publication. George Payne, F.S.A., was the authority for this in 1907 and for the siting on the "East Side of Amherst Redoubt"] (2-5)
