From TQ 52354448 to TQ 52354462 is a stretch of park pale. For the probable extent of the medieval deer park at Penshurst Place. (see illustration card). Surveyed at 1:2500 (1) (TQ 52374454) Park Pale (NR) (2) A deer park is first mentioned at Penshurst in the Calendar of Patent Rolls in 1290. (3) The 'Bears-Oak' [shown at TQ 52784475 on O.S. 1: 10 000 1971] in Penshurst Park was planted at the birth of Sir Philip Sidney in 1554. (4)
