Name:Roman Burials at East Farleigh

Summary

Two cremation burials were found in 1845 at Gallants Court, on the east side of Gallants Lane south of Gallants Farm. One burial consisted of a black globular urn containing ashes and an ornamented white bronzed Castor vessel together with fragments of other vessels, all placed in a stone cist. Another was found with pottery vessels, including a samian patera stamped Habicnsm, and two coins. Both coins were badly worn but one is of Faustina. The whereabouts of the finds is unknown.

The find site is under a long established orchard.

[TQ 72845239] Roman Sepulchral Urns found AD.1845 (NAT) (1) A cemetery was found in 1845 at Gallants Court, on the east side of Gallants Lane, 350 yards south of Gallants Farm. One deposit consisted of a black globular urn containing ashes and an ornamented white bronzed Castor vessel together with fragments of other vessels all placed in a stone cist. (2) Mainly sim. infm. Found on the west side of a large field immediately opposite a farmhouse, in trenching for lucerne. A fortnight later another deposit was found with a samian patera stamped Habicnsm and flagons and other pottery. Two coins were found, both 'obliterated' but one is of Faustina. (3) No further information was gained on these burials at Gallants Farm: the site lies in a long-established orchard. None of the finds was traced in Maidstone Museum. (4) Additional bibliography.
