Monument details

HER Number:TR 23 NW 261
Type of record:Monument
Name:Inhumations, The Bayle, Folkestone

Summary

During excavations by the Department of Archaeology, York Belgic and late Roman pottery, bonding tile and disturbed inhumations were found along with a late 10th -12th century ditch. No further information is given about the inhumations and it is unclear if the burials date to the late Roman period or the medieval period. Leland in the 1540's noted a burial ground exposed here by coast erosion, and impressive ruins of ecclesiastical character which contained much Roman bonding tile and which he called 'a solemn old nunnery' and Lambarde in 1826 reported much the same. Therefore the burials could also have been associated with the nunnery (TR 23 NW 48) or the later Benedictine church (TR 23 NW 17).

During excavations by the Department of Archaeology, York in 1981? or 82?, Belgic and late Roman pottery, bonding tile and disturbed inhumations were found along with a late 10th -12th century ditch. No further information is given about the inhumations and it is unclear if the burials date to the late Roman period or the medieval period.
