The Globe Portland Cement and Whiting Co. established by J. C. Gostling (possibly in 1869) who sold the works in 1899, the new Globe Co. then being created. (1) The work used pits between Greenhithe and London Road and around the whiting works on the south side of London Road, all connected by a tramway and tunnel under the road. The works itself seems to have been located on Town Wharf, latterly New Globe Wharf. This only ever contained a single main building with several small additions fronting the wharf. By 1909 the wharf had been extended with a T-shaped tramway jetty. The wharf was disused and buildings cleared by 1938 and the wharf has since been enlarged and rebuilt, the extension removed. In 1897 an `old` washbacks were situated in the works pit to the souuth (at TQ 5889(?) 7482). They do not seem to have been there in 1868 but there is nothing to suggest more of the works was situated there. They were largely destroyed and completely buried by the construction of the branch line to Ingren Abbey Mill in the early years of this century. (2)
