Summary

A number of pillboxes were constructed across the Western Heights in the 20th century to cover the approaches to the heights, these are generally inter-visible. This example is a type 23 pillbox comprising two cells; an open Anti Aircraft pit with a central concrete pillar for a light machine gun. It is located to the rear of St Martins Battery, reached via a long flight of steps from the covered way behind the battery. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

A number of pillboxes were constructed across the Western Heights in the 20th century to cover the approaches to the heights, these are generally inter-visible. This example is a 'Walk In' type 23 pillbox comprising two cells; an open Anti Aircraft pit with a central concrete pillar for a light machine gun. It is located to the rear of St Martins Battery, reached via a long flight of steps from the covered way behind the battery. The AA pit measures 2.35m by 1.84m with walls 1.65m high. A flight of three steps in the south-west wall of the AA pit descends 0.40m into the pillbox through a doorway 0.49m wide by 1.61m high. The interior is 2.30m square, with a flat concrete roof. A concrete ricochet wall, 1.35m long by 0.23m wide partially divides the interior. (1-4)
