Summary

A chalk pit was formerly located in fields near Cliffs End. The site is marked as "Old Chalk Pit" on the 1st and 2nd editions of the Ordnance Survey historic maps (c.1861 - 1898). The boundary of the pit is marked on the 3rd and 4th editions (c.1906 - 1940).

The outline of the pit is still visible today as a small reservoir.

Chalk pit boundary indicated on 1st ed 1872 and 2nd ed OS 6" maps, sheet 37. Located on modern map as a reservoir. Boundary marked on 3rd ed 1908 map, and disused by 1930s revised ed. (1). Interestingly shown as the approximate position as indicated on German fortifications map (11.1940), described as "Anlage unbekannter Art". A chalk quarry is visible in 1946 aerial vertical photo .
